Ise Jingu at New Year: which day and hour are quiet?
Everyone knows Ise Jingu is busy at New Year. What is harder to find out is which hours are quiet. These figures come from Ise City's own crowd measurements, averaged over two years.
Last time the shrine stayed open from 5:00 on December 31 right through to January 5, then 5:00–20:00 on the 6th. This year's hours are announced in December.
Okage Yokocho opened through the night of December 31 last time, and ran 8:00–19:30 from January 1 to 3. Hours differ by shop, so please check the official list.
From late on New Year's Eve into the early hours of the 1st, the ground in front of the main sanctuary at Naiku is too packed to move.
Crowd levels day by day, from late December to January 8. If you are booking a room, this is the decision that comes before the hour.
- Through January, weekends run about 1.6× the weekdays of the same month.
- Oharai-machi and Okage Yokocho are busy on the same days (at most 0.2× apart).
- On Monday, January 4, the first working day of the year, parts of the approach may be closed for the Prime Minister and cabinet ministers' visit.
- On January 1 the busiest hour is 0:00 (2.1×).
- Before dawn on January 1, 3:00 is the quietest (1.1×).
- On Jan 2 and Jan 3 the busiest hour is 12:00–13:00.
- On every one of these days it drops below the usual peak by 18:00.
- The shrine fills up first in the morning, and the street stays busy into the evening.
In a typical year, traffic around Naiku is restricted from the evening of December 31 through January 3. There are three ways in, listed here from the most dependable.
Buses use the same roads, so they fall behind when traffic builds. Walking is unaffected by the roads.
Shuttle delays are not published. The days and hours it runs are decided each year.
Last time the Ise-Nishi exit closed at 8:45 on January 2 to 4. To park at Naiku you have to arrive before that.
Even before the closures, a full car park cannot take you.
Ise City and NEXCO Central announce this year's dates in December.
Each bar is the average for that calendar date; the sawtooth from the 9th onwards is the day of the week. After the first three days weekdays calm down (1.2× an ordinary weekday), but weekends stay above an ordinary weekend (1.2×) for the rest of January.
Each multiple is against the busiest hour of an ordinary day at that same spot.
Do not pick a room on the assumption that you can drive up to Naiku.
