The only one of the 14 auxiliary shrines outside the old province of Ise, in present-day Shima, and — with Takihara-no-miya — one of the two “distant shrines” of Amaterasu. It is also the only auxiliary shrine with its own sacred rice field; the rice-planting rite held there on 24 June is one of Japan's three great otaue festivals and a designated Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property. Long revered by the fishermen and ama divers of Shima.
