About this place

On the east bank of the Miyagawa river, in a quiet wood dappled with light. It enshrines the spirit of Tsukuyomi-no-Mikoto — the same deity as at Tsukiyomi-no-miya, but revered here as the river deity of the Miyagawa, moon and water having long been held to be closely linked. The place name Souchi means marshland, and records survive of rice sent from here to Naiku.
