Reached by crossing the Uji bridge and following the long path along the Isuzu river. It enshrines Amaterasu-Omikami, whose sacred body is the Yata-no-Kagami mirror, one of the three imperial regalia. Tradition holds that Princess Yamatohime, travelling in search of a place to enshrine the deity, settled here on receiving the oracle “I wish to remain in this land”. Custom is to visit Geku first and Naiku second; unlike at Geku, the paths here are walked on the right. Chickens, regarded as messengers of the deity, roam the precinct freely.
