About this place

The name Narahara means 'oak plain', a record that the land here was once open country thick with oak. The sanctuary stands in woodland a little way down a hillside, ringed by a grove of cypress. The goddess enshrined here guards the water of the fields and the shrine's own rice land; tradition holds that, moved by the hardship of Princess Yamatohime's journey, she offered up the land in her care.
