About this place
In Ominato, a town on the delta at the mouth of the Miyagawa river; the shrine's wood is called U-no-mori, the cormorant wood. The deity governs salt-making and safe passage at sea, and is also long revered here as a guardian of childbirth. The village around it once burned salt for Jingu. In 1498 the Meio earthquake swept away the sanctuary along with a thousand houses; it was restored in the Edo period.
