Tradition holds that Princess Yamatohime's boat came up the Tokida river and could go no further where the channel narrowed. The place name Toba means 'the stopping place'. The deity here guards the river, and Mumino-jinja, an auxiliary shrine, shares the same sanctuary. A stone lantern set up in 1843 stands at the entrance to the grounds; the wooded rise is the landmark to look for.
